Today is Pearl Harbor Day<\/strong>.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It is not a holiday for Celebration, \u00a0as was the Thanksgiving holdiay just a few days ago. \u00a0 However, \u00a0it is a holiday that is at least as Important as Thanksgiving. \u00a0 It gives us an opportunity to meditate on the human condition, \u00a0and to look at where we are at, \u00a0as a society.<\/div>\n

This evening, \u00a0 Lisa and I went to see\u00a0Allegiance, the Musical<\/a>. \u00a0 It is a memory of the events of World War 2, \u00a0where 120,000 \u00a0 Japanaese Americans, \u00a0 many of whom had been born and raised here, \u00a0were swept up, \u00a0allowed only to take what they could carry, \u00a0and moved by train like cattle to internment camps in inhospitable parts of the country. \u00a0There, \u00a0they were treated like enemies, \u00a0denied basic human comforts, \u00a0and expected to thank America for giving them a safe place to live during the war. \u00a0 In spite of this, \u00a0a larger number of the young men enlisted in the Army, \u00a0and particiapted in some of the deadliest missions of the war. \u00a0Many of them died. \u00a0 \u00a0When they were arrested and taken away, \u00a0these citizens lost millions of dollars of property and assets. \u00a0 What did they get when they were finally released? \u00a0 $25 and a bus ticket.<\/div>\n

The only real disappointment I had with the showing was that in this large theatre, \u00a0there were only 14 peaple in the seats. \u00a0 It is a crying shame that there was so little interest in this movie, \u00a0as it is a strong, \u00a0well done, \u00a0examination of the dangers of prejudice and unbridled fear. \u00a0 \u00a0After the Credits, \u00a0there was an extensive discussion by George Takei \u00a0and others involved in the production, \u00a0 discussing the musical and how it relates to today’s world. \u00a0 It, too, \u00a0made some excellent points, \u00a0and was worth every second of viewing time.<\/div>\n

I hope that next year, \u00a0on this date, \u00a0YOU will take a few hours out of your busy life. \u00a0 Get tickets to the showing of this film. \u00a0Watch it and think about it, \u00a0and with luck take some friends along to watch it with you. \u00a0 Afterwards, \u00a0go out for a late dinner and talk about the film \u00a0 Learn something and use that knowledge to become a more spiritually aware and better person.]<\/div>\n

Why should we care about this? \u00a0 We are seeing the same rumblings happening today, \u00a070+ years later. \u00a0 The current administration has such a hate for people who are not WASPs, \u00a0that they have proposed doing just the same thing to Muslims. \u00a0 \u00a0ICE \u00a0is already doing this to long-time residents…ripping them away from their families, \u00a0and improsoning them in For-Profit failities, \u00a0not because they are dangerous criminals, \u00a0but because they have broken Administrative laws. \u00a0 These people are not the enemy, \u00a0rather adding a great deal to the quality of America. \u00a0Rather than destroying their lives, \u00a0perhaps we should honor the memory of those thousands of soldiers who died at Pearl Harbor and other Theatres of war – fighting for the freedoms defined by the Constitution – \u00a0and create an easier path to citizenship for not only them, \u00a0but ALL good people who want to come to America. \u00a0 God knows why ANYONE would want to be a part of this society now, \u00a0alas, \u00a0as we are on a very dark path right now.<\/div>\n
