As I poked through the Social Media postings this morning, \u00a0I saw many spews of hatred for Hillary Clinton, \u00a0claiming she is, \u00a0among other things a liar. \u00a0 These posts, \u00a0and the general tenor of the Presidential Campaign this year, \u00a0have moved me to look at the issue of “Truth” and our requirements of it. \u00a0 I am sure y’all will not be surprised to hear that there is quite a bit of hypocrisy in this debacle. \u00a0In fact, we are hypocrites of the first water, \u00a0as I believe we are demanding a level of “honesty” of some politicians far and above that which we require of ourselves. To top it off, many of us believe that the candidate we support reaches that goal of perfection!<\/div>\n

Politicians are human, \u00a0just like the rest of us. \u00a0We all have an agenda we want to progress. \u00a0 For us individuals, \u00a0it might be to get a new house loan; \u00a0or to get our kids to be good people; \u00a0or to get a raise at work; \u00a0Too often, \u00a0I fear, \u00a0it is to deflect blame for a mistake, and avoid punishment for that error. \u00a0 For politicians, \u00a0it includes \u00a0an attempt to influence life on a broader scale, and, \u00a0change the lives of more people. \u00a0 While working to achieve this agenda, \u00a0they, at times, \u00a0make statements that are false. \u00a0 \u00a0There are many reasons for this. \u00a0Sometimes, \u00a0it is because they have bad information. \u00a0 Sometimes, \u00a0it is because they hold an idea or stance \u00a0based on opinion, \u00a0 not facts. \u00a0 Sometimes, they go too far in trying to interpret the truth in a way that strengthens their position. \u00a0 Sometimes they out and out lie, \u00a0in order to get the voters to support them.<\/div>\n

I believe, though, that it is a fool’s errand to judge them more harshly because of the simple fact that they are not always perfectly accurate and truthful. \u00a0Which of us is so pure of spirit and so free of the sin of lying, \u00a0that we can cast the first stone? \u00a0 I certainly am not, \u00a0nor do I know anyone who is. \u00a0 As we go through life, \u00a0 we often “bend the truth” \u00a0to our advantage. \u00a0 Is it “right?”…not at all. \u00a0 Is it “human?”…Very much so! \u00a0However, to condemn a person because they are human is nonsense.<\/div>\n

How then, \u00a0should we evaluate the politicians that want to control our lives and the lives of our fellow citizens? \u00a0I submit we should look at the preponderance of evidence when \u00a0forming an opinion of them and deciding if we want to support their goals. \u00a0 Look at their actions, \u00a0and Life history, \u00a0as well as the words they are spraying out in an effort to convince me to vote for them. \u00a0 Make a strong effort to NOT let one’s own prejudices filter the words and actions of these people. \u00a0 I have suggested that it is best to \u00a0sit down with a pencil and paper, \u00a0and make a two-column list of the things the candidates have pushed as parts of their agenda, \u00a0and their views of reality. \u00a0 On the left column…write down the things we do not agree with at all. \u00a0 On the right column, \u00a0write down the items that we fully support. \u00a0 Then, \u00a0look at that list, and use it to \u00a0decide which candidate best represents what YOU believe…and then vote for them.<\/div>\n

Hopefully, \u00a0those truths will help in finding a good path, and electing politicians who will work to make our country a better place.<\/div>\n

Now, then…some specific words about the current, \u00a0Presidential Candidates.<\/div>\n

s been in the public eye since she was at University, \u00a0working to improve the lot of, and, \u00a0protect the oppressed and poor in America. \u00a0I shall not list her accomplishments here, \u00a0as they are easily found online. \u00a0 By objective analysis, \u00a0she tells the truth at least 75% of the time. \u00a0 She has, through the years, \u00a0made mistakes, and had errors in judgment, which were based in the problems listed above in this note. \u00a0However, \u00a0she has taken responsibility for those actions, \u00a0has publicly apologized for them, \u00a0and has worked to never make that same mistake again. \u00a0In spite of this, \u00a0there has been a long campaign of hatred from segments of society \u00a0that attempt to paint her as the Devil herself. \u00a0These slanders are \u00a0a campaign based in lies, \u00a0but, has been so cleverly pushed that too many Americans have bought into the lies and so dislike her.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\nDonald Trump is painted by himself and his campaign as a paragon of perfection, a teller of Truth \u00a0and the Savior of the Country. \u00a0 A large percentage of the public believes this, \u00a0in spite of the fact that objective analysis of his statements over the past 17 months has shown that 95% of the time…he is lying to some extent or another. \u00a0This ranges from misinterpreting the truth, \u00a0to such obvious falsehoods that fact checkers are amazed at his audacity. \u00a0Time and time again, he has lied, and done evil things, \u00a0yet, \u00a0as of today, \u00a0I have not heard a SINGLE example of him acknowledging his mistake, \u00a0taking responsibility for it, \u00a0and apologizing to those injured by it. I could fill up screen after screen of examples where he has lied, or, supports policies that will keep Americans from voting, \u00a0or remove civil rights from groups of citizens. \u00a0It is the work of a moment to look this up online though…. \u00a0In spite of this horrible record of exclusion and oppression, \u00a0there are a large percentage of voters who swallow his claims whole, \u00a0and love him.<\/div>\n

So…these two examples \u00a0bring up the questions that have bothered me for months now. \u00a0 Why have we, as a society, \u00a0decided to tolerate a political situation where it is not only “OK” to lie, \u00a0but that behavior\u00a0 is rewarded? \u00a0 Is this the kind of society we want to live in? \u00a0 Is “Truth” no longer important? \u00a0 \u00a0 I do not like the view of our Society I get from the answers I believe apply to these questions. \u00a0What do y’all think?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
